Too little movement and too much vigorous training both raise the risk of ovulation problems, while moderate, consistent activity sits in the healthy middle. The real culprit when intense exercise disrupts cycles is rarely the workout itself: it is low energy availability — not eating enough to cover both training and your body's basic needs. Can exercising too much actually stop you from ovulating? #

Yes — but it usually takes a lot, combined with under-fueling or stress. When your body senses it does not have enough energy to spare, the hypothalamus dials down the hormone signals (GnRH, then FSH and LH) that trigger ovulation. Cleveland Clinic describes this as functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, where periods stop and, as they put it, "without sufficient levels of FSH and LH, ovulation and menstruation stop" (Cleveland Clinic).

Importantly, this is rarely caused by exercise alone. Cleveland Clinic notes it is usually "a combination of all of these factors" — excessive exercise plus not eating enough plus psychological stress and low body fat. A single hard spin class will not switch off your cycle. A sustained pattern of high-volume training on too few calories can.

How much exercise is the right amount when trying to conceive? #

Aim for around 150 minutes of moderate activity per week — the same baseline ACOG recommends for general health and during pregnancy (ACOG). For most women trying to conceive, that means brisk walking, swimming, cycling, or light strength work most days, at an effort where you can still hold a conversation.

Moderate activity is consistently linked to better fertility. In a review of physical activity and fertility, women doing about 2 hours of moderate exercise per week had roughly 15% higher odds of pregnancy than sedentary women (PMC review). Movement improves insulin sensitivity, blood flow, and stress — all helpful for ovulation, especially for women with PCOS.

What counts as 'too much' vigorous exercise? #

The signal appears around several hours of vigorous exercise per week, not moderate movement. In one large prospective cohort, normal-weight women doing 2 weekly hours of vigorous exercise were 16% less likely to be pregnant than sedentary women; at 3-4 hours that rose to 27%, and at 5 or more hours to 32% (PMC review). This is not the same as saying intensity is bad. What is low energy availability, and why does it matter more than the workout? #

Low energy availability is the real mechanism behind exercise-related cycle loss: it is what is left for your body's basic functions after exercise burns its share. Researchers identify a threshold around 30 kcal per kg of fat-free mass per day — below it, reproductive and bone function can be disrupted (Female Athlete Triad, PMC).

This sits under the umbrella of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). A controlled study showed energy deficit — not exercise itself — was the trigger: 85% of women in moderate-to-severe calorie-deficit groups had at least one luteal phase defect, while women with only a mild deficit kept ovulating normally (PMC review). The takeaway is hopeful: you usually do not need to train less, you need to eat enough to match your training.

How do I tell if my training is in the safe zone without a wearable? #
